PrestaShop is Petralian preferred choice of ecommerce system. PrestaShop is free and open source and won the award of best open source in 2011. It currently supports over 275 dynamic features and can easily be extended with tons of free and paid modules.
An intuitive back end allows you to add products, categories, subcategories, pictures, related items, feature listings… and so on. And that same back end is getting a very slick revamp in PrestaShop’s upcoming PrestaShop 1.5 release. PrestaShop 1.5 is currently still in beta.
Search Engine Optimization
By default, PrestaShop has done a lot of efforts to make each e-commerce website SEO friendly. But there is always something to improve if it comes to SEO.
PrestaShop is a ready to use, straight out of the box PHP based ecommerce platform. However every shop will need to add custom functionality like country specific payment portal or extend the web shop with extra features like AJAX based shopping cart.
Official modules can be found in the addons section. Some examples:
My Newsletter & Statistics V3
The My Newsletter module allows you to write and format newsletters for your clients. This builds up customer loyalty which can lead to more sales. The module comes with integrated statistics so you know exactly what’s happening with your newsletter.
Facebook Shop Tab
If you want to stay close to your customers, the Facebook Shop Tab module will definitely help you out. It sets up a ‘Shop’ tab on your Facebook fan page, a mini-shop that can contain all of your products. Very useful to ask for feedback and announce new products directly to your customers on Facebook.
Besides modules, you should make your shop stand out by personalizing your shop with a custom made template. You can browse through the ‘Template’ section, or search online.
To create a truly personalized web shop, you need a unique theme and this is where Petralian can help you. With both the design as well as the integration into PrestaShop. Do mind that every module needs to be themed too, which means a bigger site requires a lot more work compared to a small and easy site.
When we were building the iluminas web shop, we have built-in a custom newsletter system. Visitors can leave their email to stay updated with the latest news from iluminas.
For this, we’ve used a custom module and hooked it to the footer of the page. Now subscribers can easily be notified when a certain product is on sale!
A closer look at the back end
Because PrestaShop utilizes the Smarty engine, you can make use of its powerful caching engine. Optimizing the caching by yourself can be very extensive. There is a lot stuff to read about the topic, if you want find out more about it.
But PrestaShop has solved this in a very simple way. In the back end there are two options:
- force compile
When your shop is live, all you have to do is enable these two and you’re all set. That’s it, really!
Want to disable an existing module? Or maybe add your FAQ on the contact page? This is all very easy to accomplish with PrestaShop . In the Back Office, you can find an overview of all the available modules. Just click the ‘install‘ or ‘uninstall‘ button and you’re all set.
Some modules even provide configuration options for extra flexibility. You can configure these on the same page.
Yet another cool feature are the detailed statistics PrestaShop provides. ‘Visits and Visitors‘, ‘Sales and orders‘, ‘Stock stats‘ and ‘Best customers‘ to name just a few.
The screenshot below shows you a nice graph with some keywords the user has been searching for. This information may be of an significant value to increase the shop sales. To give an example, you can put the most sought after products on the homepage to make them easier to find for potential buyers.
